flat.social

Wonder.me shut down. This is the closest alternative.

Wonder.me went offline in 2023 and never came back. Flat.social does the same job for networking events, socials and open-house sessions: open a link, walk over to people, talk. No account for guests, free for 5 people, and a $2 per seat Day Pass for one-off events.

Wonder.me was the tool a lot of people quietly loved. You opened a link, your photo appeared as a small bubble on a big canvas, and you dragged yourself over to a group of other bubbles to join their conversation. No avatars to customise, no map to learn, nothing to install. Universities used it for open days, communities used it for mixers, and remote teams used it for the Friday social.

In April 2023 the founders emailed users to say the platform was closing, and it went offline shortly after. Three years on, the searches have not stopped, which is why this page exists. If you are looking for a Wonder.me alternative, you want the same thing Wonder gave you: a room people can enter from a link, move around in, and leave when they are done, without a host wrangling breakout rooms.

Flat.social is that room. It is a browser-based spatial space where people walk up to each other and hear each other through proximity audio, built for networking events, team socials and a daily virtual office. Free for up to 5 people at once with no time limit, $6 per seat per month after that up to 100 people, and a $2 per seat Day Pass for one-off events. It runs in the browser, nothing to install, and guests join from a link without creating an account. Plans are on the pricing page.

What happened to Wonder.me?

Wonder.me, the browser-based virtual event space originally launched as Yotribe, emailed its users on 13 April 2023 to announce it was shutting down and went offline on 25 April 2023. As of September 2026 it has not returned and there has been no public announcement of a relaunch. Teams that relied on it have moved to other spatial platforms.

What is the best Wonder.me alternative?

Flat.social is the closest Wonder.me alternative for events and socials: it runs in the browser, guests join from a link without creating an account, conversations form by walking up to people with proximity audio, and hosts get a broadcast-style conference room for announcements. It is free for up to 5 people at once and offers a $2 per seat Day Pass for one-off events, which fits the way most Wonder.me users ran their gatherings. SpatialChat is the closest visual match if you specifically want photo bubbles instead of avatars.

Drift into a conversation, drift out again

The thing Wonder got right was that nobody had to be assigned anywhere. Flat keeps that: walk towards a group and their voices fade in, walk away and they fade out. Circles form on their own. The host does not have to run the room, they get to be in it.

What Wonder.me did, and what to look for in a replacement

Wonder had four properties that made it work for events. Any replacement should have all four, and most tools in the category only have two or three.

1. Zero friction for guests. A Wonder link was the whole onboarding. No account, no download, no avatar builder before you could talk to anyone. Flat works the same way: guests open the link, type a name, and they are in.

2. Movement instead of breakout rooms. Conversations formed because people moved, not because a host assigned them. Flat uses proximity audio for this: distance is the volume control.

3. A way for the host to address everyone. Wonder's broadcast mode let the organiser interrupt every circle with an announcement. Flat's conference room type does the same job with a proper stage, video grid and screen share, and people walk back to the spatial room when the talk is over.

4. It was free. Wonder never charged most of its users, which is part of why it did not survive. Flat is free for up to 5 people at once with no time limit. For a larger event you buy a Day Pass at $2 a seat, valid for 24 hours, with no subscription attached. A 100-person mixer costs $200.

Where Flat goes further than Wonder ever did is what happens once people are in the room: built-in games, a speed-networking mode with timed rounds, whiteboards, and a build mode for making the space look like your event rather than a blank canvas.

Miss the Wonder.me feeling? It is one click away

Open the demo room without an account, walk up to someone and talk. Then create your own space, free for 5 people, and invite your community with a single link.

What you get in Flat that Wonder.me doesn't give you

Games that actually run inside the room
Football with a live scoreboard, poker, chess, dice. A physics engine sits under the map, so the ball rolls and the dice tumble. No third-party tab, no "let me share my screen".
Speed networking with a timer
Timed rounds that reshuffle people automatically. Built for onboarding weeks, community mixers and conference socials.
Build mode, live
Drag desks, lounges, whiteboards and games into the map while your team is standing in it. No separate editor, no publish step.
One link, no account for guests
Clients, candidates and event attendees type a name and walk in. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.
Day Pass for one-off events
Host a 100-person event for $2 a seat with no subscription. Cancel free until 24 hours before.
Three room types in one workspace
Open spatial rooms for wandering, a conference grid for all-hands and presentations, and text chat rooms. Switch without leaving the space.

Networking that does not depend on the brave people

Free-roaming works for the extroverts. For everyone else, Flat has a speed-networking mode: timed rounds that pair people up and reshuffle automatically, so every attendee talks to someone new every few minutes. Run it for the first twenty minutes, then let the room go free.

What Wonder.me did better

Being honest about this is the only way the rest of the page is worth trusting.

Nothing to learn, at all. Wonder showed your photo and a canvas. Flat shows a 3D world with an avatar you steer, which takes most people about thirty seconds to get used to. Thirty seconds is not zero.

You saw faces on the map. Wonder's bubbles were your camera or your profile picture, so scanning the room meant scanning faces. In Flat you see avatars on the map and faces in the video bar when you are close to someone. If seeing faces at a glance is the whole point of your event, SpatialChat is the closer match on that one detail.

It cost nothing. Which is also why it is gone.

Move your team from Wonder.me to Flat in an afternoon

There is nothing to migrate, because there is nothing left to migrate from. Setting up a Flat space for your next event takes about an hour, most of it deciding what to put in the room.

  1. 1
    Create a free workspace

Sign up with Google or email and name your space. The free plan covers 5 people at once with no time limit, so you can trial it before paying anything.

  2. 2
Pick a map and shape it

Start from a template, then open build mode and drag in what you actually use: a standup corner, a couple of desk clusters, a lounge with a football pitch or a poker table, a whiteboard wall. Keep it small. Empty space is the main reason virtual offices die.

  3. 3
    Set roles

Decide who can build, who can moderate, and what guests can do. Roles and access controls are on the Monthly plan; on Free everyone can walk around and talk.

  4. 4
    Share one link

Pin the room link in Slack or Teams. Teammates open it in a browser. Guests type a name and join without an account. Nobody installs anything.

  5. 5
Run the first real thing today

A standup, a Friday social, a speed-networking round for new hires. Do not wait for the perfect office. The habit forms around the first useful session, not the layout.

What it costs to replace Wonder.me

Wonder was free and then it was gone. Flat's model is designed so that occasional hosts never pay a subscription.

A small community call, up to 5 people

  • Free, no time limit, every week if you like

A 100-person networking event, once

  • 100 seats × $2 Day Pass = $200, valid 24 hours, cancel free until the day before

A community that meets every week with around 30 people online

  • 30 seats × $6 = $180 a month. Everyone can have the link; you pay for how many can be in the room at once.

Current plans are on the pricing page.

“As someone who has used Gather a bit, this blows it out of the water. Incredibly intuitive and fun way to move around and talk to your friends and coworkers.”

“This really surprised me! It's super polished already and works great! Gonna try to do our company's virtual happy hour here.”

“I started off thinking: man, ANOTHER video calling app... and as I scrolled I thought more and more “this is fun... I could use this”.”

Wonder.me alternative: questions people ask

Other Wonder.me alternatives worth knowing

If Flat is not the right fit, these are the other names that come up. Each solves a different problem.

  • SpatialChat is the closest look-alike: video bubbles you drag around a canvas, no avatars. Best for academic workshops where attendees should not have to learn anything.
  • Gather gives you a pixel-art world with avatars and a deep map editor. It no longer has a free plan and its makers describe it as being in maintenance mode, so weigh that before building a community on it. See our Gather Town alternative page.
  • Kumospace is the polished 3D office at the top of the price range. Best for corporate events where visuals matter more than cost.
  • WorkAdventure is the open-source option you can host yourself. Best when data residency is non-negotiable and you have someone to run servers.

Host the event Wonder.me would have hosted
