What is flat.social?

flat.social is a browser-based platform for spatial audio spaces. Each space is called a flat: a shared 3D room where everyone has an avatar and your voice gets louder as you walk closer to someone, just like real life. No download, no install, just a link.

flat.social vs a flat

flat.social is the service. A flat is a single space you create on it, with its own web address, rooms, and members. You can run as many flats as you need.

How does flat.social work?

flat.social drops you into a flat as a small avatar. You walk around with your keyboard, and the audio is spatial: the closer you stand to someone, the better you hear them. Walk away and their voice fades. This means several conversations can happen in the same room at once without everyone talking over each other.

Everything runs in your browser. There is nothing to install, and guests can join from a link in seconds.

A flat: people gather and talk in clusters, just like a real venue.

What can you do on flat.social?

flat.social works for events, communities, and teams. You can:

  • Host meetups, networking events, and parties where people mingle naturally
  • Run casual team rooms where people drop in and out
  • Set up themed rooms with custom maps, backgrounds, and lighting
  • Share your camera and react with hearts, fireworks, and more

As the owner of a flat you control who can join, what they can do, and how it looks.

New here? If you are setting up a flat, start with Create your first space. If you were invited to one, see Join your first space.

How is flat.social different from a normal video call?

In a normal video call, everyone shares one audio channel and takes turns. flat.social gives every person a position in the room, so audio is based on where you stand. You can break into side chats, walk over to a different group, or step away for a quick one-on-one without leaving the room.

It feels less like a meeting and more like being in the same place.
