How do I customize a room in flat.social?

To customize a room, open Settings, go to Rooms, and click the room you want to edit. From there you can set a background, a background gradient, and a lighting vibe. Each room is styled on its own, so your Open Spatial main floor can feel like a beach while your Q&A room stays calm and dark.

These settings change the look only. To rename a room or change its capacity, see Create & configure rooms.

How to style a room

  1. 1
    Open the room editor

Go to Settings, open the Rooms section, and click the room you want to style. Its edit panel opens.

  2. 2
    Set a background

Under Room Background, click Upload background and choose an image, a GIF, or a short MP4/WebM video. Files must be 5MB or smaller.

  3. 3
    Pick a gradient

Under Background Gradient, click Change to pick from the preset gradients or build a custom four-point color blend.

  4. 4
Choose a lighting vibe (Open Spatial)

For Open Spatial rooms, click Change under Lighting to preview moods like Island Warm or Matrix and pick one.

  5. 5
    Save your changes

Click Save Changes. The new look appears in the lobby and in the live room right away.

Backgrounds: image, GIF, or video

The background is the image behind your room. You can upload a static image, an animated GIF, or a short MP4 or WebM video, up to 5MB. A looping video of a sunset or a slow snowfall makes a themed event feel alive without distracting from the conversation.

Keep file sizes lean so the room loads fast for guests on slower connections.

Gradients and lighting vibes

The background gradient sets the color wash behind the room. Flat.social ships with 15+ presets like Tangerine Sunset, Hacker, and Mojito, plus a custom picker where you choose four corner colors of your own.

For Open Spatial rooms you also get a lighting vibe: 8+ moods such as Island Warm, Matrix, and Soft Night that change how the whole 3D scene is lit. Preview each one before you commit.

Match the look to the moment

Use a bright Island vibe for a daytime mixer and switch to Soft Night for an evening wind-down. Pair it with your logo and look & feel for a consistent brand.
