How do I set up my camera and mic in flat.social?

Before you join a room, flat.social shows a device setup screen. Pick your camera and microphone, toggle each on or off, and check the live preview and mic level meter. When everything looks and sounds right, join. You can change any of this later from your in-room settings.

How to set up your camera and mic

  1. 1
    Connect your devices

On the setup screen, select Connect Audio & Video. Your browser pops up a request to use your camera and microphone.

  2. 2
    Allow access

Choose Allow in the browser prompt. Flat.social needs this to let you talk and appear on camera. Block it and nobody will hear you.

  3. 3
    Pick your camera

Open the Camera dropdown and choose the right one. The live preview updates so you can frame yourself.

  4. 4
    Pick your microphone

Open the Microphone dropdown and choose your input. Talk for a second and watch the level meter move to confirm it is picking you up.

  5. 5
    Toggle on or off

Use the switch under each device to start with your camera or mic off. You can flip them on once you are inside.

Pick your devices, watch the mic meter move, then join.

The mic level meter is your quick test. If the bar stays flat while you talk, you picked the wrong microphone or it is muted at the system level.

Why is my browser asking for permission?

Browsers block camera and mic access until you say yes. The first time you join, you'll see a prompt asking to use them. Pick Allow. If you clicked Block by mistake, flat.social can't hear you and the preview stays empty.

To undo a block, open the site permissions (usually the padlock or camera icon in the address bar), reset camera and microphone to Allow, then reload the page. See Camera or mic not working for browser-by-browser steps.

Can I change devices after joining?

Yes. Hover the microphone or camera button in the bottom control bar and open its settings to reach the audio and video sections. There you can switch your input devices and also pick your speaker (audio output). Plugged in headphones mid-call? Switch your output there so you stop hearing people through your laptop speakers.

Speaker selection lives in-room

The setup screen covers your camera and mic. Choosing where sound comes out, your speaker or headphones, happens in the in-room audio settings.
