Move your avatar

Walk around the room with your keyboard and find people to talk to.

How do I move my avatar in flat.social?

Move your avatar with the W A S D keys or the arrow keys, and press Space to jump. There is nothing to install and no mouse-dragging needed. Walk toward a group and their voices get louder; walk away and they fade.

The movement keys

The controls map the way you'd expect:

  • W or moves forward
  • S or moves back
  • A or moves left
  • D or moves right
  • Space jumps

Hold two keys at once to move diagonally. Picture this: you spot a friend across the room, hold W and D to cut over at an angle, and you're in their conversation in a couple of seconds.

Use WASD or the arrow keys to walk anywhere in the room.

How do I get back to the start?

Use the Teleport home button in the bottom control bar (the house icon). It snaps your avatar straight back to the spawn point. Handy when you wander into an empty corner, get stuck, or just want to start over near the entrance.

Lost in a big map? One tap on Teleport home beats walking all the way back.

Typing? Your keys do double duty

While your cursor is in a text box, like the chat panel, movement keys type letters instead of moving you. Click back onto the room first, then W A S D work again.

Why walk instead of just clicking a person?

Flat.social uses spatial audio, so where you stand decides who you hear. Walking up is how you join a chat, and stepping back is how you leave one. It feels closer to a real room than a video call, where everyone shares one channel.
