What is a flat?
A flat is your space on flat.social. It holds your rooms, your branding, your members, and your settings, and it lives at its own web address like flat.social/your-name. You create one flat and add as many rooms inside it as you need.
Before you start
You need a flat.social account to create a flat. Creating one takes a couple of minutes, and you can change almost everything later, so do not overthink your first choices.
How to create a flat
- 1Open the create flow
Sign in and choose to create a new flat from your dashboard.
- 2Name your flat
Give it a clear name (up to 64 characters). This is what people see at the top of your space.
- 3Pick your URL
Choose the web address (slug) for your flat. Keep it short and memorable. flat.social checks availability as you type.
- 4Choose a use case
Tell flat.social what the space is for, such as meetups and events, networking, friends and family, or work. This helps set sensible defaults.
- 5Create and open your flat
Confirm to create the flat. You land in your new space, ready to add your first room.
You can rename your flat URL in settings, but old links will stop working and guests will need the new one. See Privacy & access.

Once your flat exists, the next step is to add a room people can actually walk into. Rooms come in three types, and each fits a different kind of gathering. Then you can brand the space and decide who gets in.
