You open Microsoft Teams for your 9 AM standup and get a loading spinner. Or a blank white screen. Or maybe Teams launches fine but your mic is dead and nobody can hear you. Sound familiar?

Microsoft Teams not working is frustrating because the problem could be anything: a login failure, a crashed desktop app, audio that cuts out mid-sentence, or notifications that stopped showing up two weeks ago. The official Microsoft support pages scatter these fixes across dozens of articles, and most of them assume you already know what's wrong.

This guide covers 12 of the most common Teams problems with step-by-step fixes for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. Start from the top and work down, or jump to your specific issue. Most problems resolve within the first few steps.

Why is Microsoft Teams not working?

Microsoft Teams stops working when the service itself is down, your app cache is corrupted, login tokens expire, network settings block the connection, or device permissions prevent audio and video access. Cache corruption and outdated app versions are among the most common causes of desktop Teams issues. Checking the [Microsoft 365 Service Health page](https://status.office.com) first rules out server-side outages before you troubleshoot locally.

Is Microsoft Teams Down Right Now?

Before you start troubleshooting your device, check whether the problem is on Microsoft's end. If Teams is down for everyone, no local fix will help.

Here's how to check Microsoft Teams status quickly:

  1. Visit the Microsoft 365 Service Health page to see real-time service status
  2. Check Downdetector for Microsoft Teams to see if other users are reporting outages
  3. Search Twitter/X for "Microsoft Teams down" to see live reports

If the status page shows a service issue, the only fix is to wait. Microsoft typically resolves major outages within 1-4 hours. Use email or a phone call for anything urgent in the meantime.

Your entire marketing team is pinging you on Slack saying "Teams is broken." You spend 20 minutes clearing cache and reinstalling before someone checks Downdetector and discovers a global outage. Check the status page first. It takes 10 seconds and can save you a lot of wasted effort.

How to Fix Microsoft Teams Not Working (12 Steps)

Follow these 12 fixes in order, starting with the quickest solutions. Each step takes 1-3 minutes, and most issues resolve within the first five.

  1. 1
    Restart Microsoft Teams completely

Close Teams from the system tray (right-click the Teams icon and select "Quit"). On Windows, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and end any remaining "Microsoft Teams" processes. On Mac, right-click Teams in the Dock and select "Quit," then check Activity Monitor for leftover processes. Relaunch Teams. A full restart clears temporary glitches that cause freezing, blank screens, and failed connections.

  2. 2
    Check your internet connection

Open a web browser and load a few websites to confirm your internet works. If sites load slowly, restart your router. Teams needs a stable connection with at least 1.5 Mbps upload and download for video calls. On Wi-Fi, move closer to your router or switch to a wired ethernet connection. If you're on a VPN, try disconnecting it temporarily since some VPNs block Teams traffic.

  3. 3
    Clear the Microsoft Teams cache

A corrupted cache is the single most common cause of Teams desktop issues. On Windows: close Teams, press Windows + R, type `%appdata%/Microsoft/Teams` and delete everything inside the folder. On Mac: close Teams, open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G, go to `~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams` and delete the folder contents. Reopen Teams and sign in again. You'll need to re-enter your password, but your chats, files, and settings are stored on Microsoft's servers and will reload automatically.

  4. 4
Sign out and sign back in

Click your profile picture in Teams, select "Sign out," and close the app. Wait 10 seconds, reopen Teams, and sign in with your email and password. This refreshes your authentication token, which fixes login loops, "We couldn't sign you in" errors, and account sync problems. If you have multiple Microsoft accounts (work + personal), make sure you're signing in with the correct one.

  5. 5
Update Microsoft Teams to the latest version

Click your profile picture in Teams, then select "Check for updates." Teams downloads updates in the background and applies them when you restart. If you can't open Teams at all, uninstall it and download the latest version from [teams.microsoft.com](https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads). On mobile, open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) and update the Teams app.

  6. 6
Fix audio problems (microphone and speakers)

In Teams, click Settings (gear icon) > Devices. Check that the correct microphone and speakers are selected (not a virtual audio device or disconnected Bluetooth headset). Click "Make a test call" to verify. If your mic still doesn't work: on Windows, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone and make sure Teams has access. On Mac, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and enable Teams. Also close any other apps that might be using your mic (Zoom, Discord, OBS).

  7. 7
    Fix video and camera issues

Open Teams Settings > Devices and check that your camera is selected and the preview shows your video feed. If the preview is black or says "No camera found": close other video apps (Zoom, Google Meet, Skype), then restart Teams. On Windows, go to Settings > Privacy > Camera and confirm Teams has permission. On Mac, check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera. For external webcams, unplug and replug the USB cable. If you're on a laptop, check if a physical camera shutter or keyboard shortcut (often an F key) is disabling the camera.

  8. 8
    Fix notifications not showing up

In Teams, go to Settings > Notifications and check that notifications aren't set to "Off" for the categories you want. On Windows, also check Settings > System > Notifications and make sure Teams is allowed to send notifications, and that Focus Assist (or Do Not Disturb) is turned off. On Mac, check System Settings > Notifications > Microsoft Teams and enable "Allow Notifications." If you use the web version of Teams, make sure your browser allows notifications for teams.microsoft.com.

  9. 9
    Fix chat messages not syncing

If sent messages show a spinning icon or chats appear empty, your connection to the Teams servers may be interrupted. Close and reopen Teams. If that doesn't help, clear the cache (Step 3). For the web version, try a hard refresh: Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac). If messages are missing in a specific channel, the channel owner may have changed permissions. Ask your Teams admin to verify your access.

  10. 10
    Fix screen sharing not working

If your screen share shows a black screen to others, or the "Share" button is grayed out: on Mac, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording and make sure Microsoft Teams is enabled (you'll need to restart Teams after). On Windows, try running Teams as administrator. If you're in a meeting organized by someone outside your organization, the meeting organizer may have disabled screen sharing for attendees. Ask the organizer to allow it in meeting options.

  11. 11
Fix Teams not loading or showing a white screen

A white or blank screen on startup usually means a corrupted cache or a GPU rendering conflict. First, clear the cache (Step 3). If that doesn't work, disable GPU hardware acceleration: open Teams, go to Settings > General, and check "Disable GPU hardware acceleration." Restart Teams. On Windows, you can also try launching Teams with the `--disable-gpu` flag: right-click the Teams shortcut, select Properties, and add ` --disable-gpu` to the end of the Target field.

  12. 12
    Reinstall Microsoft Teams

If nothing else works, a clean reinstall fixes deep corruption issues. On Windows: open Settings > Apps, find Microsoft Teams, and click Uninstall. Then delete the cache folder at `%appdata%/Microsoft/Teams`. Download a fresh copy from [teams.microsoft.com](https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads) and install it. On Mac: drag Teams from Applications to the Trash, delete `~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams`, and empty the Trash before reinstalling. On mobile, delete the app and reinstall from your app store.

Microsoft Teams Not Working on Windows 11

Windows 11 introduced stricter privacy defaults and a new Teams app ("new Teams" vs. "classic Teams"), which causes specific problems you won't see on Windows 10.

Confirm which version you're running. Microsoft has been migrating users from "classic Teams" to "new Teams" throughout 2025 and 2026. Click your profile picture and look for "New Teams" or "Classic Teams" in the header. Some organizations haven't fully migrated, and running the wrong version for your IT setup causes login failures and missing features.

Check Windows privacy settings:

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and confirm Microsoft Teams has access
  2. Do the same for Camera and Notifications
  3. Under Settings > Apps > Startup, make sure Teams is enabled if you want it to launch at login

Firewall and proxy issues. Corporate firewalls sometimes block Teams traffic after Windows updates change network adapter settings. If you're on a company network and Teams suddenly stops connecting, contact your IT department. They may need to allowlist Teams domains (*.teams.microsoft.com, *.skype.com, *.office.com).

If your team is exploring alternatives to Microsoft Teams, spatial platforms offer a fundamentally different meeting experience.

Microsoft Teams Not Working on Mac

Mac users run into a few platform-specific issues with Teams, especially around permissions and Keychain access.

Fix Keychain issues. If Teams keeps asking you to sign in every time you open it, the login token stored in your Mac's Keychain may be corrupted. Open Keychain Access (search for it in Spotlight), search for "Microsoft Teams" and "com.microsoft.teams," and delete any matching entries. Restart Teams and sign in again.

Check macOS permissions:

  1. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and enable Microsoft Teams
  2. Check Camera and Screen Recording the same way
  3. If Teams doesn't appear in the list, you may need to open Teams first, trigger a call, then check again

macOS Sonoma and Sequoia quirks. Apple's newer macOS versions changed how background apps are managed. If Teams stops receiving notifications when minimized, go to System Settings > General > Login Items and make sure Microsoft Teams is listed under "Allow in the Background."

You're a designer sharing your screen during a client review on your MacBook. You click "Share screen" and nothing happens. The fix: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording > toggle Teams on, then restart the app. It takes 30 seconds once you know where to look.

Fix Microsoft Teams Not Working on Mobile (Android & iOS)

Teams on mobile has its own set of common failures, mostly around permissions and background app behavior.

Android:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Microsoft Teams > Permissions
  2. Grant access to Microphone, Camera, and Notifications
  3. Go to Storage > Clear Cache (don't tap "Clear Data" unless you want to fully reset the app)
  4. Check that Battery Optimization isn't killing Teams in the background: Settings > Battery > Microsoft Teams > select "Unrestricted"
  5. If calls drop frequently, disable "Wi-Fi Calling" temporarily to rule out a VoIP conflict

iPhone & iPad:

  1. Go to Settings > scroll to Microsoft Teams
  2. Toggle on Camera, Microphone, and Notifications
  3. If the app crashes on launch, delete it and reinstall from the App Store
  4. For notification issues, check Settings > Focus and make sure your current Focus mode allows Teams notifications

Both platforms: Force-close the app (swipe it away from the app switcher), then reopen it. If you're getting "Microsoft Teams call issues today" errors, check the Microsoft 365 Service Health page to rule out a server-side outage.
