What is a map in flat.social?

A map is the 3D environment of an Open Spatial room: the floor, walls, furniture, and props your avatars walk around in. You pick a map template when you create the room, and you can rearrange it later in build mode.

How do maps work in Open Spatial rooms?

Every Open Spatial room runs on a map, the 3D space avatars move through. You choose a map template when you create the room, which gives you a starting layout. With the right permission, you can then enter build mode and move things around live. Conference and Chat rooms don't use maps. For a refresher on room types, see Room types.

The map shapes how people gather. Open floors encourage one big crowd, while nooks and separate areas pull people into smaller groups.

How to pick a map template

You set the map when you create an Open Spatial room.

  1. 1
Start a new Open Spatial room

In Settings, go to Rooms, click Add Room, and choose Open Spatial as the room type.

  2. 2
    Open the template picker

Click Select Map Template to browse the available 3D environments.

  3. 3
    Choose a template

Pick a template that fits your event. The room starts with that layout, which you can edit afterward.

  4. 4
    Create the room

Finish creating the room. Your chosen map loads when guests walk in.

How do I edit the layout in build mode?

If you have the canBuildMap permission, you can enter build mode inside an Open Spatial room and rearrange it in real time. Select an element to move it, rotate it, or scale it, and everyone in the room sees the change as you make it. This lets you set up a stage, a lounge corner, or a sponsor booth without leaving the space.

Who gets build access is set by your roles. See Roles & permissions to grant canBuildMap.

Build mode needs a permission

Only people with the canBuildMap permission can enter build mode. Give it to trusted co-hosts so guests can't rearrange your room mid-event. Manage this in Roles & permissions.
