This student engagement checklist is designed for honest self-reflection, not surveillance. You're evaluating your teaching environment, not grading individual students. The goal is to spot patterns and find opportunities you might be missing.

Start by working through each of the five categories: visual presence, active participation, collaborative learning, content design, and connection & support. For each item, rate how consistently it shows up in your online classes. Don't overthink it. Go with your gut feeling based on your most recent sessions.

Once you've completed all five sections, you'll get an overall engagement score along with a breakdown by category. The score isn't a pass-or-fail grade. It's a snapshot of where things stand right now. A lower score in one category simply means there's room to try something new.

Pay close attention to the suggestions that appear after your results. Each one is tied to a specific category and gives you a concrete next step. For example, if your collaborative learning score is low, you might see a recommendation to introduce small-group breakout activities or peer review exercises.

You can retake the checklist as often as you'd like. Many educators find it useful to reassess every few weeks, especially after trying new strategies. Comparing scores over time helps you see what's actually working and what needs a different approach.

Remember that student engagement metrics vary across disciplines and class sizes. A seminar with 15 students will look different from a lecture hall with 200. Use the checklist as a personal benchmark, not a universal standard.
