How do I send reactions and actions in flat.social?

Hold Shift to open the actions menu, then press a number to trigger one. Shift 1 sends a heart, Shift 2 a firework, and so on. Each reaction shows up as a visual effect that everyone nearby can see.

How to send a reaction

  1. 1
    Hold Shift

Press and hold Shift to open the actions menu above the control bar. You can also click the smiley button to keep it open.

  2. 2
    Press a number

With Shift held, press the number for the action you want. The menu shows which key maps to which effect.

  3. 3
    Watch it play

The effect appears on or around your avatar so everyone nearby sees it. Let go of Shift to close the menu.

The reactions and what they do

Six actions sit on the menu by default:

  • Shift 1 sends a heart
  • Shift 2 sets off a firework
  • Shift 3 casts a magic effect
  • Shift 4 blows a bubble
  • Shift 5 does a backflip
  • Shift 6 toggles your torch

Most are one-off bursts. The torch is different: it stays on until you toggle it off.

The torch: your personal light

The torch (Shift 6) is a light you carry. Toggle it on and you can point it at the ground around your avatar, which is handy for finding your way in a dim room or just setting a mood. Toggle it off the same way when you are done.

Picture a late-night hangout in a dark map: a few people flick on their torches and the room turns into a circle of moving light.

Reactions are proximity-based, like spatial audio. Walk closer to the people you want to react to so they catch the effect.

Reactions are ignored while typing

If your cursor is in the chat box, Shift and the number keys type characters instead of firing reactions. Click back onto the room first.
